Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy

Athletes put their bodies through more strenuous activity than anyone else. Although their muscles are extremely well-conditioned, the increased use can cause a buildup of fluids – especially lymphatic. Sports massage helps improve circulation for muscles that are always ready to perform.

We’re trained in the administration of these massages and can make sure that you receive the top care and maximum benefits possible. Contact us to schedule a sport massage appointment, and one of our specialists will help you prepare or recover from an event.

For cash clients (non-insurance clients) the price for a massage is:

  • Full 60 Minute Massage: $80
  • Full 90 Minute Massage: $110

*Insurance clients pay according to their individual benefit plan. Please contact your insurance provider for further information.

Types of Sports Massage

The technique is generally the same for all types of sports massages, but when it’s performed determines its benefits.

  • Pre-event. A massage performed on athletes usually less than 45 minutes before an event gives them optimum blood flow, resulting in better performance. It can also reduce the chances of cramping, which is caused by an excess of lactic acid in the muscle. The tissues will be stretched and less likely to tear or strain when in use.
  • Post-event. After the event, the athlete can undergo another session to help normalize muscles and skin. The relaxing process once again removes unneeded fluid and may help alleviate next-day tenderness.
  • After suffering an injury, athletes often choose rehabilitative massages. The increased blood circulation from these sessions can speed up healing and keep stiffness at bay.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Many people aren’t sure what to expect when they schedule their first massage. But we assure you there is nothing to be nervous about! Although no two massages are alike, there are some things that are typical to each session. The session will take place in a quiet, comfortable room. Soothing music is often played to help you relax

Before Your Massage

The Therapist Will Assess Your Massage Needs
After introducing themselves, your practitioner will ask why you are seeking massage therapy, and inquire about any injuries or medical conditions you may have. They may also ask additional questions to gather information that can help improve your overall experience. Be honest with your practitioner – their role is to ensure that you have the most pleasant and successful session possible.

During Your Massage

Let Your Therapist Know What You’re Feeling
The massage therapist will then excuse themselves so that you can disrobe to your level of comfort. You will then get on the table – either face up or face down – under the sheet. During your session, you will be draped (covered) at all times, and only the area being worked on will be exposed. A typical full body session includes your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, shoulders, and abdomen. You may request that a therapist spend additional or less time on a specific area. Oil or lotion is often used, so be sure to tell the practitioner if you have any preferences or sensitivities.
During the massage, please make sure to communicate with your therapist about the pressure he or she is applying. Though many massage therapists can tell when they are using light or deep pressure, it is always good to let them know how you feel. If you want more or less pressure, be sure to communicate that—the massage is all about you!
When your massage session is complete, the practitioner will leave the room so that you can get dressed. Sit up slowly and take your time getting dressed.

After Your Massage

Plan Your After Care
Make sure to drink plenty of water.
After your dressed and ready to go we will discuss the session briefly to check in with you to see how you are doing. The massage therapist may suggest things you can do at home. Lastly, you can book your next session according to your practitioner’s recommendation.

Should I tip my massage therapist?
