WHAT IS CUPPING?

One way to think about cupping is that it is the inverse of massage. Rather than applying pressure to muscles, the suction uses pressure to pull skin, tissue and muscles upward.  The purpose of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve pain, remove “heat” and pull out the toxins that linger in your body’s tissues.

You usually will feel a tight sensation in the area of the cup. Often, this sensation is relaxing and soothing. Cupping causes the skin to temporarily turn red, blue or purple, especially if there is an injury or energetic blockage under the area that was cupped. The skin discoloration can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, but is rarely painful. Once the marks have cleared, the procedure can be repeated until the condition or ailment is resolved.

Cupping can be performed as part of your massage therapy session.

THE BENEFITS

  • It can help remove toxins from the body and stimulate the flow of fresh blood, lymph, and Qi to the affected area and throughout the body.
  • It is thought to release tissues deep inside the body, relax tense muscles and ease stiffness associated with chronic back and neck pains, migraines, rheumatism, and fatigue. Some athletes have been known to use cupping therapy to naturally improve performance and reduce stiffness, muscle cramps, joint pains and scar tissue caused by injuries.
  • It often works wonders for patients with the flu, colds, coughs, back and muscle pain, poor circulation, anxiety, red itchy skin conditions (though cups are not applied to inflamed areas), allergies, fevers, aches and a myriad of other pains.

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Many people aren’t sure what to expect when they schedule their first massage. But we assure you there is nothing to be nervous about! Although no two massages are alike, there are some things that are typical to each session. The session will take place in a quiet, comfortable room. Soothing music is often played to help you relax

Before Your Massage

The Therapist Will Assess Your Massage Needs
After introducing themselves, your practitioner will ask why you are seeking massage therapy, and inquire about any injuries or medical conditions you may have. They may also ask additional questions to gather information that can help improve your overall experience. Be honest with your practitioner – their role is to ensure that you have the most pleasant and successful session possible.

During Your Massage

Let Your Therapist Know What You’re Feeling
The massage therapist will then excuse themselves so that you can disrobe to your level of comfort. You will then get on the table – either face up or face down – under the sheet. During your session, you will be draped (covered) at all times, and only the area being worked on will be exposed. A typical full body session includes your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, shoulders, and abdomen. You may request that a therapist spend additional or less time on a specific area. Oil or lotion is often used, so be sure to tell the practitioner if you have any preferences or sensitivities.
During the massage, please make sure to communicate with your therapist about the pressure he or she is applying. Though many massage therapists can tell when they are using light or deep pressure, it is always good to let them know how you feel. If you want more or less pressure, be sure to communicate that—the massage is all about you!
When your massage session is complete, the practitioner will leave the room so that you can get dressed. Sit up slowly and take your time getting dressed.

After Your Massage

Plan Your After Care
Make sure to drink plenty of water.
After your dressed and ready to go we will discuss the session briefly to check in with you to see how you are doing. The massage therapist may suggest things you can do at home. Lastly, you can book your next session according to your practitioner’s recommendation.

Should I tip my massage therapist?
